As reported in Block Club Chicago, renovation of the Rogers Park Metra station at Lunt and Ravenswood Avenues could begin within the next three to five years. The station is one of four (soon to be five) stops within Chicago city limits on the Union Pacific North Line. The line runs between downtown Chicago (Ogilvie Transportation Center) and Kenosha, Wisconsin. Rogers Park is the final stop in Chicago.
The renovation will include the demolition of the existing, street-level warming station and the construction of a new warming station at track level; widening of the platform to accommodate boarding from more train cars; and other improvements including relocated bike parking, improved lighting and a rebuilt wheelchair access ramp. Federal and state funding must still be secured, and design review must be completed, before the renovation can begin.
Late last year, Metra began construction on a new station on the UP-North Line just south of Rogers Park at Peterson and Ridge Avenues. Metra is also completing the renovation of the Ravenswood station further south at Lawrence Avenue. These improvements, once completed, will provide more transit options and better service to the residents of the neighborhoods served by these stations.
