Money Magazine just came out with its list of Best Places to Live for 2022-2023 and, guess what? Our own Rogers Park neighborhood took the #5 spot, behind Atlanta, Tempe (AZ), Kirkland (WA), and Raleigh (NC). The first two sentences in the Money Magazine description of the community read:
“Few places are as welcoming to different religions, creeds or ethnicities as Rogers Park, an underdog neighborhood located in the northeast corner of Chicago. Rogers Park is known as the most diverse neighborhood in Chicago, which itself is one of the most diverse cities in the country, and the result is truly something special.”
The article goes on to point out the neighborhood’s excellent walkability and access to transit, its highly educated and young population and its low median home prices ($200,500) relative to many other Chicago neighborhoods and “well below” most of the other cities on the Best Places list.
It’s nice to see the neighborhood get this national recognition, especially when so many news stories about Chicago these days are negative. People who know Rogers Park know it’s a special place – uniquely diverse and welcoming even in a city known for its diversity and openness. It is also true that there are a lot of people who don’t know Rogers Park, not just nationally but even in our own backyard.
The Money Magazine ranking will certainly shine some light onto a neighborhood that richly deserves the attention. Let’s hope this national spotlight piques the curiosity of many more people to come visit and find out for themselves why Rogers Park is such a special place. That would be a terrific outcome from this well-deserved praise and recognition.
