Around Rogers Park: Summer in the City – Rogers Park-style

Summer in Rogers Park always goes by much too quickly. By the time anyone reads this article, the summer will be almost over. For Rogers Parkers, summer is a time to enjoy many of life’s small pleasure – hanging out in outdoor cafes with friends; spending weekends at any of the neighborhood’s beautiful beaches, or buying seasonal produce at the Glenwood Sunday Market.

But summer in Rogers Park also means the return of many annual festivals and traditions that define the neighborhood. Two of the best are the Artists of the Wall Festival and the Glenwood Avenue Arts Fest. Rogers Park Builders Group has long supported both events.

Artists of the Wall Festival

This year, the Artists of the Wall Festival celebrated its 25th anniversary over the weekend of June 16-17. The festival brings together a diverse group of neighborhood residents who work together to create a new work of art along the 600-foot length of the sea wall at Loyola Park Beach between Farwell and Morse. The finished product will be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike until the entire wall is whitewashed and painted again at next year’s festival.

The Glenwood Avenue Arts Fest is the neighborhood’s largest street festival. It took place over the weekend of August 17-19.  This year’s Fest marks the 17th time the event has taken place. As in past years, the Fest combines artists and vendors of all types with live music from Friday night through Sunday evening. RPBG’s own Al Goldberg has been one of the driving forces behind this event and remains one of its biggest promoters and key organizers. As always, the Fest is free to all.

Summers may be short, but they are anything but boring, especially in Rogers Park where every weekend seems to offer new and interesting things to do.
